Software giant Microsoft yesterday announced it was planning to launch a string of security oriented products, targeted at large businesses, as part of a trust building initiative.

One such product, which will be available to beta test by the end of the year, will aim to protect client machines in the networks of large businesses from viruses, worms and other Internet-based attack vectors. The software will give network administrators the ability to configure protection against these nasties.

Microsoft has recently being doing a bit of anti-virus/anti-spyware company shopping, which might lead to concerns that it will be pushing out existing corporate security firms such as Symantec and McAfee. However Microsoft's Mike Nash told Reuters that "There are customers that will choose to use competitors' products." Also, Microsoft has been creating alliances with a number of firms, including the likes of Symantec to help work on security solutions for the Windows platform.

Since the barrage of security exploits that plagued Microsoft a while ago now, resulting in a global worm epidemic, the company has made significant progress in its approach to Operating System security. The post-SP2 era is providing a far more secure Windows XP, much of which will assist a user who isn't themselves security conscious. However, much more can be done to protect both individual users and corporate networks, and it looks as though Microsoft is continuing in its efforts to do this.
