AMD has this week attempted to revitalise its range of Bulldozer CPUs with a price cut and the introduction of two new parts.

In an effort to stand out against Intel's incumbent Sandy Bridge, AMD has cut the asking price of the 3.1GHz FX-8120 CPU by £20 effective immediately. The reduction is the latest tumble for the second-rung part, which has seen its price tag fall from over £180 in December 2011, to under £150 just three months later.

Coinciding with the price cut, AMD has also made available two new Bulldozer parts; the hexa-core FX-6200, clocked at 3.8GHz, and the quad-core FX-4170, clocked at 4.2GHz. Both chips feature a 125W TDP, as detailed in the table below, and are available to pre-order from scan.co.uk* priced at roughly £130 and £105, respectively.

Model Cores CPU Clock Turbo Clock L2 Cache L3 Cache TDP
FX-8150 8 3.6GHz 4.2GHz 8MB 8MB 125W
FX-8120 8 3.1GHz 4.0GHz 8MB 8MB 125W
FX-8100 8 2.8GHz 3.7GHz 8MB 8MB 95W
FX-6200 6 3.8GHz 4.1GHz 6MB 8MB 125W
FX-6100 6 3.3GHz 3.9GHz 6MB 8MB 95W
FX-4170 4 4.2GHz 4.3GHz 4MB 8MB 125W
FX-4100 4 3.6GHz 3.9GHz 4MB 8MB 95W

I knew I wasn't just being lazy putting off my new PC build! Gotta love price cuts on the 8120 though, perfect processor for me
Piledriver still six months away, these price cuts will help AMD sell these Bulldozer cores. Still does the £20 cut make a 8120 a good buy? What intel CPU does that it put it against.

AMD £20 cashback ends on the the 29th of February:

It means the CPU is now around £130. OcUK,have it at the same price with a copy of the latest Deus Ex game,so if you get it with the cashback from them and have free postage it means the CPU is effectively £120:

It depends…..you could argue that it's up against the 2130……although personally I think that's slightly unfair as the likelihood is that the intel mobo would be costing more.

Although it's a very tight section of the market…..for £20 more (old 8120 price effectively) you can get a 2310.

So depending on workload, heat, noise, current mobo etc, you have a wealth of choice in that £120-140 bracket.
It all depends on what you think about the other competition out there. Bulldozer needed to slash the cost in order to stay competetive in the market. The corresponding server chip (Opteron 6200 series) already have enough price difference to make them worth consideration. Interesting to see what the new FM2 chips bring to the market and what Piledriver can solve that let Bulldozer down so much. Personally I would still buy i5 or i7 but this is because there is guaranteed futureproofing. However it is an interesting point that shaithis makes which is the mobo costs and power consumption.

AMD loves power so those who live for cost savings power wise……. Not bad for our American cousins.
