Overclocking

Overclocking

Both cards' cooling was augmented by using a couple of 80mm fans blowing air across the respective heatsinks. The final results were somewhat surprising. We re-ran DOOM 3 and Far Cry, both at 1280x1024 4x AA/8x AF, with the overclocked cards.

Notice that the Connect3D card, supposedly with the inferior core, actually managed to run a little faster than the GECUBE version. This tells us that most, if not all, Radeon X800 GTO 256MB cards' core clocks can be increased to 450MHz without issue. In fact, we'd be very surprised to see one that didn't run at 450MHz with default cooling. Both overclocked GTOs are still behind the flashable-to-16-pipe SAPPHIRE X800 GTO²'s default benchmark.

The same setup but with Far Cry as the game of choice, shows decent framerate gains from just a little work.
