A new survey has revealed the most popular internet browsers.

Conducted by Netmarketshare.com, the survey uncovered that Microsoft’s browser is still the most popular way for the world to scour the web, accounting for 52.63 percent of all desktop browsers. But its popularity has dwindled over the past year with Google Chrome making the biggest impact, with usage up 6% over last year due to the popularity of Android devices.

Google Chrome gains ground

The survey details the following desktop browsing habits:

Internet Explorer – 52.63 percent
Firefox – 22.52 percent
Google Chrome – 17.62 percent
Safari - 5.43 percent
Opera – 1.56 percent
Other – 0.24 percent

The survey also revealed that 94% percent of all internet browsing is done via desktop, with just 6 percent stemming from mobile browsers.

Safari dominates mobile browsing

Statistics reveal that Safari has gained the most ground over its competitors, gaining a further 6.58% share over the same time last year.

Good to see other browsers catching up with Internet Explorer(IE), hopefully they won't loose market share due to Microsoft making IE a permanent part of Windows again.

I also like the fact that they share more information about how their information is gathered, a breath of fresh air compared to other statistics sites.
I use Chrome on my laptop because it seems to use less battery power than IE8 (WinXP) and it's much better performance wise.
However, on my desktop I use IE9. I like its download mechanism and its fast, plus the Google toolbar that is lacking on Chrome is very useful.
I like Firefox and have it as a secondary browser on my desktop. I've never liked its method of remembering passwords for websites though, otherwise its a solid browser.

I'd be interested, now Microsoft seems to be a bit more open to nutty ideas, whether they'd put IE on other phone OS's, considering Chrome is on Windows Phone 7 and since Google makes its own OS, it hasnt suddenly dropped everything its developed for Windows.
Despite their update numbering, I still like FireFox. (I've already said that recently.) Chrome is a backup.

Actually typing this message from within Mozilla ThunderBird…
Firefox for me

I would use chrome if they changed:

1. I want a BOOKMARKS SIDEBAR (Why cant you have one? :()
2. I love the addons for firefox

What's wrong with it? I find it more secure than other browsers' *click here to view all your saved passwords* without so much as an authentication step.
