ASUS has confirmed that its complete line of Eee Pad tablets will receive the Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” update.

Android 4.0 will come packed to the rafters with a host of new features, including a fresh new interface, better navigation and more advanced customisation options.

Android 4.0 will also come preloaded on the new Transformer 2 tablet device, which ASUS recently showcased featuring a new Tegra 3 quad-core NVIDIA processor and carrying 32GB of flash storage. The Transformer 2 is expected to retail at approximately £537.

In a statement released by the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer it confirmed that it doesn’t yet have a release date planned for the update.

"Are you waiting for Ice Cream Sandwich?” reads the press release. “Good news for ASUS customers. Google recently announced the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, which brings some exciting new features and capabilities. We're delighted to confirm support for Ice Cream Sandwich on the ASUS Eee Pad Family - our aim is to bring the latest Android update to the Eee Pad Series, but at this time we are unable to set a date for its release. Please stay tuned for more news on our Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans."

The Eee Pad series currently consists of the Transformer and the Slider tablets, both of which boast a 2 1.0GHz dual-core CPU and 1080p video playback. The Eee Pad range of tablets also come complete with a detachable QWERTY keyboard and are preloaded with a copy of Polaris Office.

Yeah, ASUS are being a little insensitive to customer feelings by not making up its mind and laying down a clear roadmap. Without this information it's not possible to make a highly informed purchasing decision and you don't know where you stand in regards to other devices like the slider. It's of course because they're still finding their feet and flying off in all kinds of directions but it's about time to settle down.

Hmm, not sure that Asus really can do that - mainly because Google themselves seem to be “winging it” wrt the OS development. Within those limits I'd suggest that Asus have been the most “together” of all the Android tablet makers, c.f. Samsung who seem to be adopting a scattergun approach to tablets, and Motorola who don't really seem to know what to do with the Xoom.

I'm not saying the Transformer is the best tablet ever - but I will say that for what I want to do it's 90% there and certainly a heck of a lot better than the competition. Like I've said before - if there's some way to get a wired Ethernet connection then it'd be at 99% perfect (for me). As it is, I find more and more things I can use it to do - latest was that I was using it to screen digital camera pictures “in the field” to make sure I'd got the shots I needed to.

And at the risk of appearing like a total Asus-zealot, the Padfone is probably the only device out there at the moment that could persuade me not to hold off for a Galaxy S III to replace my current mobile.
Quite suprised and impressed with this announcement. I can't see HTC etc doing this. I have always liked the Transformer and think the screen is far better than the xoom and iconia.
