ASUS U46 laptop arrives in the UK

ASUS has announced the UK launch of its U46 laptop, with an SRP of £699.

With its ultra-slim design, and chassis thickness coming in at less than 1in, the U46 is a 14in model that features a second-generation Intel Core i5 CPU, and graphics capabilities powered by NVIDIA's GT 540M GPU.

 

 

The U46 is based on Intel's HM65 chipset, packed with 4GB DDR3-1333 RAM and utilises a 2.5in 5400RPM hard drive - for 500GB worth of storage capacity.

ASUS claims battery-life of up 10 hours and tells us that the U46 is built with a fusion of durable spun aluminium covers, and brushed champagne-coloured metals.

And at over 2Kg it's no good being thin if you're still heavy. Why are they so obsessed with thin? It's the most pointless measurement of design success, anything reasonably slim (like <35mm) is fine for laptops, you slip it in your bag and go… wtf? Hardly like if it's more than 2” thick you won't be able to see over it to watch TV!

Mostly because of the battery that is making it heavy. Hard to balance between long battery life and weight.

At just less than 1" thick, this puts it on a par with the Macbook Pros. Hardly ultra slim.

14“ is an odd size. Not big enough for any real benefit over 13”, but big enough to cause more battery drain. They didn't even bother upping the res with it - a bit of a disappointment.
Still, the other specs are good - decent CPU and battery life. The CPU is pretty much the only improvement over my current portable though, and certainly not worth the upgrade.

Bring out a 13" with 1440x900 or higher, reasonable (e.g. i5) CPU, and keep the battery life around 10h and I'll be interested. Oh and dump that graphics, I really don't need a 540M in my ultraportable - that should decrease the weight a bit. Though I guess that's a hard call to make since it won't really impact battery life with Optimus.

Saw one of these on display in my local Comet yesterday evening. Very light and seems well made, no creaking or flexing on the keyboard. Not a glossy bit of plastic in sight, either (except the screen)

But….

Put a IPS 1440x900 matte display on it please. I passionately hate all these crappyTN 1366x768 screens :censored:
