We will rock you

OK, so this is tenuous tech news at best, but when a tech company decides to celebrate the life of one of the most entertaining people ever, that gives us all the excuse we need to join in the fun.

Google has decided to celebrate what would be Freddie Mercury's 65th birthday, were he still alive, by making a special Google doodle - the Google logo you see in its homepage. They even invited fellow Queen band-member - guitarist Brian May - to blog about him.

"Freddie would have been 65 this year, and even though physically he is not here, his presence seems more potent than ever," wrote May. "And he lived life to the full. He devoured life. He celebrated every minute. And, like a great comet, he left a luminous trail which will sparkle for many a generation to come. Happy birthday Freddie!"

A subtext of these celebrations is to bring attention to freddieforaday.com, part of a charity set up in Mercury's name to help fight HIV/AIDS, of which he died in 1991. The site encourages people to dress up as Mercury - or even just wear his trademark moustache - in order to attract sponsorship. So if the world suddenly seems a camper place today, you'll know why.

The opportunity to write about Freddie Mercury doesn't come along too often in a tech hack's life, so we might as well exploit it to the max. The first video is the full Google animation celebrating the great man, the second is a montage of Mercury moments, and the third is the entirety of Queen's legendary 1986 Wembley Stadium gig. Enjoy.

Greatest doodle ever TBH :D
Love the video that goes with it!
It's a pretty nice doodle, then again, most of Googles' doodles are nice! :)
