What's in a name?

Google is poised to drop brands Blogger and Picasa, if Mashable's sources are to be believed, as part of its rollout of a consolidated look and feel to its websites in the build-up to the full-scale launch of Google+. Functionality wise, Picasa and Blogger won't see any alteration, other than possibly the changing of a aesthetics, although that's not a sure bet either, currently.

The rebranding takes on the typically logical Google theme: Picasa will be renamed to Google Photos, and Blogger will take on the name of Google Blogs. That same simple, descriptive theme already applies to most of Google's taken-over resources - notably Google Sites (formerly JotSpot) and Google Docs (the word processing aspect of which was formerly Writely).

However, where other name changes took part at the point of Google's acquisition (or at least before the Google version of the products was launched), Blogger and Picasa have been allowed a long period to build up brand awareness. That said, it would be foolish to suggest that Google can't bring its brand's clout to bear to popularise the rebranded product.

As Google makes its latest push to unify its branding across all of the sites it owns, it will be interesting to se what, if any, other products are caught up in the rebranding exercise.
