Facebook has confirmed that over half of the UK's population now uses the social network.

Joanna Shields, VP of Facebook Europe said: "We can announce today that we have reached 30 million in the UK, which we are really excited about," according to The Daily Telegraph.

It is well known that Facebook has over 500 million users across the globe and it revealed last July that it also notched up 26 million UK users. That means that around 4 million Brits have flocked to the site in the past 8 months to bring the total to 30 million.

Of course Facebook's next global aim will surely be to hit 1 billion users and the site's founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, has previously reportedly said it is almost guaranteed to do so.

"If we succeed [in innovating and remaining relevant] there is a good chance of bringing this [Facebook] to a billion people...it will be interesting to see how it plays out," he apparently said when speaking at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

One report by Oxygen Media and Lightspeed Research has reportedly found that a third of women aged between 18 and 34 check Facebook when they wake up (even before popping to the toilet) and over a fifth check Facebook in the middle of the night.

Shields reportedly emphasised Facebook's ability to drive traffic to media sites at The FT's Digital Media and Broadcasting Conference.

She said the average Facebook user has 130 friends who they frequently share links to media sites with, on a regular basis.

"Media companies which take advantage of that are really seeing the benefits," she reportedly said.

However, she apparently gave nothing away about whether Facebook plans to develop its own mobile OS.

Commenting on the rekindled disagreement about sharing users' details between Google and Facebook, she reportedly said that Google's latest move to disable Nexus S consumers' ability to sync their contacts with Facebook friends, was ‘silly'.

Breaking 30 million barrier =/ half UK population using it. Even if there were 60 million people in the UK. :/
Pah! No way does it have 50% of UK population using it….see multiple accounts, one for the cat, dog, goldfish and hedgehog…
I'm glad this isn't true or we would need to be sooner on the revolution list.
