AMD has launched five new variants of its Opteron 6100 Series processor family for server environments.

The chips, available immediately, are socket-compatible with the existing AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform and offer greater performance whilst keeping within their respective 65W, 80W and 105W ACP (Average CPU power).

Processor ACP Frequency Cores
AMD Opteron  6132 HE 65 2.2GHz 8
AMD Opteron  6140 80 2.6GHz 8
AMD Opteron  6166 HE 65 1.8GHz 12
AMD Opteron  6176 80 2.3GHz 12
AMD Opteron  6180 SE 105 2.5GHz 12

A mild frequency increase is available across the board, with the new range-topping 2.5GHz, 12-core Opteron 6180 SE offering increased performance for environments such as financial services and newly-virtualised datacentres.

The power-efficient Opteron 6132 HE and 6166 HE, meanwhile, receive speed bumps of 200MHz and 100MHz, respectively, and target web-server and cloud-computing workloads.

Commenting on the launch, AMD's vice president and general manager of the server business Patrick Patla stated that "These new server CPUs deliver greater performance than we've ever had before".

"When we launched the AMD Opteron 6000 Series platforms last year, we eliminated the '4P tax' and met market demands for higher performance-per-dollar-per-watt. Our customers' benchmarks and testimonials bear out these improvements, and these five new parts -- and the rave reviews -- prove that we continue to deliver on our vision."

AMD expects Acer, Dell and HP to launch refreshed platforms based on the new 8- and 12-core Opterons in this quarter, and the company is expected to follow up with 16-core parts based on the upcoming 32nm Bulldozer architecture later in 2011.
