AMD has just announced its quarterly results (PDF), and while we won't worry about getting stuck into the numbers, the company had a pair of quite interesting announcements to make.

First up was the fact that 1.3 million Fusion APUs had been shipped to partners in the last quarter (ending December 25). Considering that the netbook and ultraportable processors only started to leave the factory in November and that they weren't even launched until the start of January, it isn't a bad start for AMD's new baby. It also suggests that partners are showing a fair bit of interest in the new technology, although it remains to be seen whether or not this can be translated into actual sales.

The other titbit is that the company has shipped a grand total of 35 million DirectX 11-capable GPUs. This is only around sixteen months after the first HD 5000-series boards were launched in September 2009. For comparison, that's about the same number of iPhone 4s that have been sold worldwide since last June and approximately equivalent to selling a graphics card to every man, woman and child in ATI's home country of Canada.

CFO Thomas Seifert - who's captaining the ship following the 'departure' of CEO Dirk Meyer - commented "AMD enters 2011 with significant momentum, amplified by the successful launch of our first Fusion APUs. I am confident we can drive profitable growth based on the strength of new products we will bring to market.  Our customers recognize that Fusion APUs are at the core of delivering the world's most vivid digital experiences".

I for one am really looking forward to seeing Fusion parts in the wild. And 35 million DX11 parts is some achievement!

What he said. Also, selling as many DX11 GPUs as iphones is not such a big achievement considering even the top GPUs probably haven't got as much margin as the fruit.
YAY! (I am an AMD fanboy) :) AMD all the way for budget builders like me.
