AMD's Radeon HD 6950 might be one of the best mid-range graphics cards available right now, but at around the £230 mark, it remains a premium option for many users.

Should the price be putting you off, AMD may soon have a noteworthy alternative in the form of a Radeon HD 6950 equipped with a smaller GDDR5 frame buffer - down from 2GB to 1GB.

A 50 per cent reduction in memory was always on the cards, but the first real proof has now surfaced in the form of a listing at European retailer r-computer.de.

According to the retailer's virtual shelves, a Sapphire HD 6950 1GB will be available in 1-2 weeks priced at €245 - that's around €20 less than Sapphire's existing 2GB model.

We've yet to see any UK listings, but the Radeon HD 6950 1GB could well hit the £200 sweet spot if/when it makes its way to retail.

I hope these are core unlockable, in which case I might be tempted to get one of these
I would say that its more than a ‘mid range’ card.
I think these 1GB models will not be unlockable. The 2Gb model is the way to go.
