Apple's Mac App Store has opened for business so now Mac users can play with around 1,000 free and paid-for applications.

Mac users can buy, download and install apps via iTunes and the store is available for Snow Leopard users through a software update as part of Mac OS X v10.6.6.

Among the categories on the new store are: Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities. There are staff favourites, top charts and new app sections to help users find applications as well as user ratings and reviews.

Steve Jobs said: "With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start. We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps."

While many apps available on Apple's mobile platform could be seen as time-wasting games or neat little bits of functionality, it seems the Mac App Store has grown up a little and offers fully-fledged programme-like applications.

Apple said new apps plus iPhone favourites are available as well as iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband apps from Apple's iLife '11 suite, priced at around $14.99 each. Pages, keynote and Numbers apps from iWork are priced at around $19.99 each, while Aperture 3, Apple's photo editing and management software is available for $79.99.

Developer Autodesk has brought its professional-grade drawing app, SketchBook Pro to the Mac App Store, while Ancestry.com's Family Tree Maker app and Boinx Software's animation, video production and photography software is also included in the Mac App Store's offerings.
