We've heard a lot of rumours about Microsoft's plans for Windows 8, ranging from a modular kernel to integrated 3D and support for ARM processors. But the latest murmurings are a little more down-to-earth.
According to TechRadar - which cites the usual anonymous sources - the next version of the world's most popular operating system will make gaming a central focus.
The source is reported as saying "Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming. Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS".
Apparently Microsoft will look to capitalise on the expansive MMO market and other strongholds of PC gaming - such as first-person shooters - to help return the platform to its former glory at the pinnacle of home gaming.
Although the software-giant has been seen to shun the PC as a gaming platform in recent years - especially following the closure of famed RTS developer Ensemble Studios - and has lagged behind as digital distribution services like Steam have exploded in popularity, it has started to reverse the trend recently.
The revamped Games for Windows Marketplace was definitely a step in the right direction, and the recent announcement that Rahul Sood would be joining the Interactive Entertainment Business could have a huge impact.
However, what this 'push' into gaming actually means is far from clear and only time will tell exactly what Microsoft has in store. There are rumours that the next version of its flagship OS will be previewed at CES next week, so with any luck we'll have a better idea after Steve Ballmer's upcoming keynote presentation.
