Tablet tip off

Pictures of a tablet by Palm, called the PalmPad have been unearthed with the fabled tablet tipped to make its debut at the annual Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Vegas.

Commentators expect a raft of tablets to be flaunted at the show but Fox News has got its hands on what it claims is a spec sheet for HP's PalmPad from a ‘trusted source'.

The news network said HP will show off 3 versions of its new tablet, which will reportedly run WebOS version 2.5.1, said to be based upon the never-released HP Slate, but the 3 tablets will small hardware differences. HP reportedly plans on making the PalmPads available in March 2011.

Apparently a fourth tablet is also in the pipeline, designed specifically for university students but it is not expected to make an appearance at CES.

Fox said the consumer version of the PalmPad will have a spec almost identical to Apple's iPad and will run on Sprint's 4G network. It is also believed to trump the iPad on a couple of features including a small HDMI port, USB 3.0 port, plus front and rear cameras with LED flashes. However it is not known how much the new tablet will cost.

According to the drawings, the PalmPad is slightly slimmer than the iPad and bears some resemblance to Amazon's Kindle. It will reportedly also have a ‘multi-switch' like its mobile Palm Pre peer.

The trio of PalmPads set for CES fame have not been finalised, according to Fox's sources but are expected to sport a similar screen size to Apple's iPad rather than a smaller 7 inch screen like Samsung's Galaxy Pad.

Apparently the university PalmPad's screen will be slightly smaller and the tablet will reportedly be built to access a university's internal web content. HP told Fox it hopes they will be in use by Autumn of next year.

Commentators think the leaked pictures and spec details roughly match HP's Tony Bradley's recent comments, when he reportedly told shareholders: "You'll see us with a Microsoft product out in the near future and a webOS-based product in early 2011."
