Western Digital has spruced up its range of network-attached storage solutions with the introduction of the My Book Live.

The streamlined home network drive, pictured below, touts improved performance through the use of an updated processor and a Gigabit Ethernet network link.

Transfer speeds are rated at up to 100MBps - double that of "other network drives in its class", says Western Digital - and the My Book Live acts as a simplified, easy-to-use server through the integration of numerous key applications.

A built-in DLNA or iTunes media server provides straightforward network streaming functionality, and backups are well catered for via both WD SmartWare for Windows and Apple Time Machine for Mac. Apple users can also look forward to a revamped WD Photos application that's now better suited to the iPad and iPhone 4 for remote viewing.

Throw in a three-year limited warranty and you're looking at an all-round useful box. The price? £154.99 for a 1TB model or £204.99 for the 2TB model. Sold? Both will be in European stores next month.

If it can be hacked for Optware then it will be a good box to have. If not then I'll stick with my Buffalo LS XHL (1.2ghz Kirkwood CPU)
