What do you call a phone with a huge screen? Does the 5in display on the Dell Streak make it a tablet, or does it still pass as a giant mobile? According to NVIDIA's Jen-Hsun Haung, there is another category between smartphone and tablet - the superphone - and 2011 will be its year.

The CEO sees the new category of devices as the logical next-step for the smartphone. The 4.3in Motorola Droid X is the first such device and it's claimed that many more will follow as we move into 2011.

Super?

The basic format will be a phone that is larger than the iPhone - which has a 3.5in display - but smaller than a tablet, offers 'basic Internet connectivity' and the ability to handle multimedia content. Of course, according to Huang, all superphones will run some flavour of Android.

Obviously the CEO would prefer that companies use NVIDIA's dual-core Tegra 2 SoC, though phone-manufacturers haven't exactly been lining up to release handsets based on the powerful silicon so far.

While it's clear that NVIDIA sees a future in oversized phones, it's not so clear that the public will feel the same way. Though Huang claimed that the devices could allow 'new opportunities in casual computing', there doesn't seem to be anything that a superphone could do that a 3in or 3.5in smartphone couldn't. Furthermore, 4.3in devices are seriously pushing the limits of usability for a mobile, even for people with large hands.

While a larger screen is another way for manufacturers to differentiate their products in the crowded smartphone market, superphones will still have to convince the mobile-buying consumer. Let us know just how big you think is too big in the HEXUS.community?

Bit late isnt it? HTC have had 4.3“ display phones for ages, windows mobile and even android…. i fail to see whats actually going to be ”first"?.

edit: oh dear… fail moment, it was from Nvidia about tegra 2 so i assume the droid X is the first phone for that? Seriously like the chip from nvidia as the original proved itself on a few devices like the zune HD so the second gen surely showed promise. If they manage to get HTC onboard and launch the true successor to the HD2 in a years time (with tegra 3? if not 2) cause then ill get one :D.

No, fraid there is no first here. He's just peddling large-screen Android phones of 4.3 and up.

Funnily enough, the Droid X isn't a Tegra 2 phone. I'm almost certain that Digitimes got it wrong. All of the reviews I read said it was a TI OMAP 3630 (http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/motorola-droid-x-review/), and considering it was out a few months ago, it's highly, HIGHLY unlikely that it has the Tegra 2.

So no fail at all.

EDIT: Didn't notice this before, but we also said it's using an OMAP - http://channel.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=25223
Bigger mobile phones? Good lord no, please.

I don't want to put anything bigger or heavier than my HTC magic (3.2") in my pocket, and I don't want a mobile phone that has to be carried in a bag. Who, exactly, is going to buy these monstrous unpocketable phones? I'd much rather have a smaller phone with the same features, and a separate, significantly larger, tablet. I really can't see the point of anything in between in terms of ergonomics or usability…
ah ok, well i guess its just marketing talk by nvidia then haha!.

And i used to think the same way as you jim, with regards to my LG renoir it was 3“ and didnt want anything bigger but then I got the HD2 and man did my regards to size change! Anything bigger than 4.3” and id probably say no because it would stretch my limits physically, 4.3 is the sweet spot between useability and size, big screen for easy web browsing and then its small enough to fit in all my pockets. I do think its only mainly HTC phones that can get away with it because the screen uses much less frame compared to say the iphone so its dimensions are a mere few MM more and its about the same thickness just the big ass screen makes it look bigger :D.

but yeah, add a tegra 2 to the HD2 successor and id finally be happy to choose it as an upgrade!.
the superphone… seriously
