Records are meant to be broken, so we knew that 3,068MHz wouldn't stand as the world's fastest memory-speed for long.  With the help of a little liquid nitrogen, an intrepid overclocker - posting as ‘mat' - has now managed to hit 3,078MHz, setting a new CL8 world-record.

The feat was achieved using two 1GB sticks of Corsair's Dominator GTX6 memory, which is rated to run at 2625MHz at timings of 9-11-10-30.  However, after turning the voltage up to 1.88V and applying liberal amounts of liquid nitrogen, the memory was flying along at 3078.2MHz and CL8-11-8-31.

Of course, the cooling brought the memory down to a chilly -90°C, while the CPU sat at around -75°C.

Not content with one record, though, mat also posted the world's highest CL7 speed, hitting 3059.4MHz at CL7-11-8-31, though it required the voltage to be cranked all the way up to 1.94V.  Though he had a go at posting the top CL10 speed, mat only managed to push the system to 3097.6MHz, earning a respectable second place.

The rest of the system was comprised of an Intel Core i7 870 engineering sample and Gigabyte's P55A-UD7 motherboard.  The ram-pot was Besi's Memory Freezer and was specifically designed for cooling Corsair Dominator memory with liquid nitrogen.  Though the CPU was also aggressively cooled, the frequency was left conservative to try and ensure that it wasn't a limiting factor.

Of course, we don't expect either of these new records to stand for very long.  After offering his congratulations, previous record holder ‘marmott' declared that he and partner Benji Tshi would be trying to post a new top-speed soon.
