Samsung has launched the latest in its N-series of netbooks, the N230. While the internals tread relatively familiar ground for a netbook, the N230 manages to squeeze out an absolutely astounding 13.8 hours of usage by way of an optional 66WHr long-life battery. Even using the standard 32WHr battery, the netbook manages a respectable seven hours of life.

The battery life for netbooks saw a significant jump following the introduction of Intel’s energy-efficient Pine Trail platform earlier this year, but nearly 14 hours of juice is still largely virgin territory. Even allowing for the normal amount of marketing bravado and controlled test conditions, it’s an impressive claim. Samsung lists the N230 as tipping the scales at less than 1kg and measuring only 23.2mm at its thickest, but we suspect that’s with the smaller of the two power packs.

Beyond the battery, the N230 packs a choice of Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz) or the slightly faster N470 (1.83GHz), 1GB RAM, a 160GB hard-drive (with the option for a 250GB drive) and Windows 7 Starter. The 10.1in screen features a 1,024x600 resolution that is powered by the standard Intel GMA3150. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of a Broadcom Crystal HD chip to help with video acceleration.

Connectivity options are slightly more interesting than the other specs, with support for Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n and the option of an integrated 3G modem giving users plenty of choices. Samsung is also doing its best to make life easy for customers by including programs designed to seamlessly move files between devices in the home, including phones and TVs.

Previous entries in the N-series garnered very positive reviews from all sectors due to their general design and exceptional usability. The N230 looks to continue on much the same path while upping the ante with fantastic battery life. The netbook should be available globally from today priced at £349.

14 hours battery life is great. Been impressed with Samsungs offerings so far in the netbook area, and this might just be what tempts me to buy when we're off camping. Would have to have the 250gb hard drive though, as storage from my camera etc. would be a main use…
I really which reviewers would not do this, saying something has “blah” battery life, with an extended OPTIONAL battery. You know what i bet it would be even better if you carried a car battery and DC-DC converter! Reviews should be done as the kit is supplied the majority of users will never buy a different battery. Also that has to be the worse laptop picture I have seen, atleast use one where you can see the keyboard/screen so you have some idea of what it is like…
that's impressive - but the location of the Samsung logo really annoys me, havent they heard of symmetry?
It's not a review, it's a news item. As such, it's not really up to Hexus what pictures they use and what figures they report on - they're simply publishing a story based on the press release.

I suspect that most etailers will carry a version equipped with the larger battery - they certainly have for other netbooks (which requires an annoyingly careful attention to detail when checking the specs!). And it's perfectly reasonable for manufacturers to put these kinds of details into their press releases if they're going to supply the larger batteries to retailers. I'm sure that if Hexus get one in the labs they'll put that claim to the test…
I'm interested in Netbooks with 12V PSUs - the you can run of a car battery or solar panel really easily for camping !
