Cloud-based editing

Google has released a new video editor allowing users to perform essential editing tasks without the need for any additional computer software.

The move makes it even simpler for budding Tarantinos to edit uploads to YouTube and create films without worrying about file formats - publishing them to the site with a single click.

The cloud-based tool allows basic video-editing features such as combining multiple uploaded videos to create a longer montage or trimming the beginning or ending of chosen videos to omit awkward pauses and unwanted footage.

YouTube users can also add a music file from the AudioSwap library of tens of thousands of songs, but this could lead to display ads in return for using the some of the audio files.

Edit

Although the tool provides only editing basics at present, YouTube says it will add more features based on user feedback.

Furthermore, the introduction of the user-friendly editing tool within YouTube will enable Google to take a further crack at Microsoft’s Windows Movie Maker that currently dominates the consumer video-editing market.

YouTube launched an advanced Flash-based video editor based on Adobe Premiere Express called YouTube Remixer in 2007 but it was discontinued after features like transitions, captions and the ability to add extra images proved slow and riddled with bugs. The YouTube Video Editor is available on TestTube - YouTube's ideas incubator.
