Apple will open its 27 UK retail stores at 8am on Friday in anticipation of what's expected to be a consumer rush toward its latest gadget; the iPad.

The tablet device became an overnight success following its US launch in April, and with UK sales scheduled to begin in less than 48 hours, gadget aficionados are expected to queue through the night in order to ensure they get their hands on what could be limited stock.

According to Apple, the belated international launch of the iPad is a result of "surprisingly strong US demand," and it seems supply could continue to struggle to keep up with demand.

Consumers who placed a pre-order for the device at the start of the month have been guaranteed a Friday delivery, but Apple's online store now states that any new orders possibly won't be fulfilled until late next month.

In an effort to expand the reach of its high-profile launch, Apple is also believed to have teamed up with high-street electronics giant DSG International. According to reports, DSGI's PC World and Currys stores will be offering the iPad for sale from Friday morning as part of an exclusive 60-day deal. Although Apple has yet to confirm the rumoured agreement, a total of 139 DSGi stores are expected to have the device in stock at launch. A detailed list of the stores is expected to be made available later this week.

Having sold one million iPads in 28 days in the US, Apple will be hoping for a repeat success with its UK audience.

If Apple make it the sheep will come…
Im getting sick to death of people buying Apple products becuase they're ‘cool’.
Yeah, same… they are a fashion icon, my Aunty's got an iphone 3gs, yet she doesn't even know what apps are, let alone how to use the app store. She has an iphone because it's “good”.
I'll be there. Oh wait. No I won't. I'll be busy having a poo.
I'll be honest and say I quite fancy one to play with,
but at Ā£499 its a very expensive toy, and outside impulse buy territory.
