The higher frequencies come into play, and Sapphire's HD 5970 TOXIC 4GB extends its lead over a reference alternative. Performance jumps 19 per cent at 2,560x1,600, but you do pay an additional £200 for the privilege.

What's interesting here is that a true HD 5870 CrossFire configuration - i.e. dual cards - offers superior performance despite lower GPU clock speeds.

Such is the maturity of CrossFire that a pair of HD 5850s continue to look mighty impressive at around the £450 mark. Where two GPUs and a limitless budget is concerned, NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 480 SLI configuration remains supreme.
