Synology has today expanded its range of network attached storage (NAS) solutions for home or business workgroup users with the introduction of the DiskStation DS410.

The NAS box, measuring 168mm x 184mm x 230mm, offers four SATA drive bays - supporting either 2.5in or 3.5in hard drives - and provides a maximum theoretical capacity of 8TB. RAID modes 0, 1, 5, 5+Spare, 6, 10 and JBOD are all supported, as is the ability to act as an iSCSI target.

Powering the device is a 1.06GHz processor and 512MB of DDR2 memory, a combination that Synology reckons is capable of delivering average read and write speeds of 115MB/s and 54MB/s, respectively.

Not the quickest we've ever seen, but Synology is hoping the combination of capacity, features and relatively-low price will make the DiskStation DS410 a popular choice. Armed with the recently-launched DiskStation Manager 2.3 firmware, the DS410 offers a long list of features - including a revamped user interface, a new EZ-Internet Wizard that assists users in setting up remote web access and improved versions of Synology's popular File Station 3, Photo Station 4, Audio Station 2 and Surveillance Station 4 applications.

For the business crowd, other features include simplified RAID setup via Synology Hybrid RAID, a range of online and offline backup solutions, and AES 256-bit shared folder encryption.

Synology measures the noise of the DS410's dual fans at 23dBA, and the unit's connectivity options include two USB ports and eSATA for storage expansion, as well as a single Gigabit Ethernet jack.

We've only touched on the feature list - head on over to Synology.com to see what else the DS410 can do - but before you go, take with you the most pertinent detail; the DiskStation DS410 is available now priced at around £400*.
