NVIDIA has made available its latest GeForce driver release - version 197.13 - and has offered an apology to any users who "experienced quality issues" with the preceding version, 196.75.

Just weeks ago, the company's 196.75 driver was found to be potentially lethal to GeForce GPUs due to an error which caused graphics card fans fail to run at the required speed. The problem led to users of NVIDIA's own support forums reporting GPU temperatures exceeding 100°C.

NVIDIA promptly removed the driver, and recommended its users roll back to a prior release.

Today, the GPU giant appears to have identified and resolved the issue with a new driver package, version 197.13. Available for Microsoft's Windows XP and Windows 7 operating systems, the new release is said to "resolve fan speed issues reported with version 196.75 drivers".

Commenting on the release, NVIDIA states that it "apologises to our customers that installed the 196.75 driver and experienced quality issues".

"For the small number of customers that did experience problems, in almost every case reverting back to our 196.21 driver immediately resolved their issues. We continue to work closely with our add-in-card partners and PC manufacturers to help resolve any additional customer issues not solved by reverting to the earlier driver," said the company in a statement.

This is good news :). Gonna get this installed.

You've linked to the “English (US)” drivers :puke::puke::puke::puke::puke::puke:
I hate “English (US)”. There's no such bloody thing. It's our language, use it!
Yeah. Hexus a UK based site links to US drivers. How could you? :D
I don't mind apps that provide U.S. English and U.K. English versions. They are, after all, different languages. It does niggle me though when apps that are localised for all sorts of languages, but then only cater for the U.S. flavour of English.

Not as much as when my kids start using American(ish) words though. I'd rather they end up sounding Norfolk :)
i find it rather ironic they screwed up and released card killing drivers right as they push for Fermi.

if they actually launched on time i'd call it killer marketing (/me ducks slap)

but… I'll just call it poor QC.
Rather pathetically, they're still not back to where they need to be - the faulty drivers were fully WHQL “release” editions, whereas these are betas. Sure, they probably work OK, but for those of us trying to keep things stable and/or supply customers with systems, it's just not good enough. Sorry to sound like a whinge-bag, but Nvidia still have some way to go to restore the credibility/favour they lost over this.
