Toshiba has decided to join the enterprise storage market today with the introduction of its 600GB, 2.5in MBF2600RC drive.

Toshiba's latest, pictured above, operates at 10,025rpm and features a 16MB buffer and 6Gbps SAS (Serial-attached SCSI) interface to achieve an average read seek time of just 4.0msec. Internal transfer rates, meanwhile, are up to 216MB/s - 13 per cent quicker than its previous generation 2.5in drives, says Toshiba.

Designed for use in business-critical environments, Toshiba's drive is also available with optional drive-based encryption that conforms to the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) Enterprise Security Subsystem Class specification.

Elsewhere, further advancements to Toshiba's power management technology enable the drive to spin at a slower rate when not being addressed, resulting in power savings of up to 28 per cent, says the Japanese manufacturer.

Joining the 600GB drive are 300GB (MBF2300RC) and 450GB (MBF2450RC) models, also launched today.

Does anyone know how on-drive encryption works? Do you need a TPM to work with it?
