Very Cherry Christmas

If you're on a tight budget this Christmas, you may want to consider buying Cherrypal's $99 laptop, dubbed 'the Cherrypal Africa.'

Palo Alto based Cherrypal claims the mini seven inch net-book was named after a project the firm undertook in Accra, Ghana recently, where it donated a learning center for 600 children.

The little laptop is actually based on a 400 MHz XBurst processor, a low power, low performance MIPS based CPU designed by Ingenic Semiconductor. It also features 256 MB RAM, 2 GB flash memory and can run either Linux 'Green Maraschino' or Windows CE, which the firm says is perfect for embedded systems.

Cherrypal, which last year was credited with having brought the world's 'greenest' desktop computer to market, says Africa is also a remarkably green machine. "From top to bottom, Cherrypal designs all of its computers to consume the least amount of power possible, while using fewer parts than other manufacturers. This saves electricity and keeps excess computer byproducts out of landfills," notes the firm.

When HEXUS asked the company's founder, Max Seybold, how Cherrypal had managed to produce a sub $100 machine when even the likes of Intel and OLPC couldn't, we were told "We have less overhead and hardly any margin on this product."
