In a world where, increasingly, people demand that their information be delivered here and now, Google's "relevancy expert", Amit Singhal, made what he claimed to be the most exciting announcement of his career - the first foray into realtime search.

Noting that it had once taken years for information to pass from generation to generation, Singhal said it had only been with the invention of the printing press that people truly became aware of how important the dissemination of information on a wide scale could be.

And, up until about 30 years ago, print and radio were still what the majority of people had to rely on for that information.

But then, enter Google, which Singhal said, initially started out crawling the web once a month for updates. As time went on, the firm started crawling every few minutes, but even that wasn't enough to satisfy the impatient hordes.

Today, with live newsfeeds on both Facebook and Twitter, Google says it has realised it needs to step up its game even more, with every second counting.

With that, Singhal went on to announce Google's Real Time Search, which updates results on the page in real time - something no other search engine has ever done before.

Demonstrating the new tech, Google product manager, Dylan Casey entered a search query for Obama. The regular results page appeared but suddenly, updates began flooding, including real time tweets mentioning the President.
