Seagate has announced that it will introduce the industry's thinnest 2.5in hard disk drive at next month's CES trade show in Las Vegas.

The drive, part of Seagate's Momentus Thin series, measures just 7mm thick and could pave for the way for a bevy of thinner-than-ever computing devices such as ultra-thin notebooks.

Although details regarding the 7mm drive's capacity and performance remain unknown, it's comfortably thinner than today's 2.5in drives - the majority of which measure 9.5mm in height, whilst a select few opt for a 12.5mm form factor in order to facilitate higher capacities. Given the size of Seagate's upcoming drive, it's almost certain to feature just a single internal platter.

Seagate states that the drive is already sampling, and the qualification process is underway.
