In need of a storage solution for your enterprise? Take a look at Thecus' latest, the i8500.

The 2U RackMount solution, pictured below, targets business use where data security is paramount and features a bevy of protective features.

Supporting eight 3.5in hard disks, the i8500 supports up to 16TB of storage and a multitude of RAID modes - including RAID 0, 1, 0+1, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60 and JBOD. What's useful is that the unit can be equipped with an optional lithium-ion backup battery that'll enable unwritten data to be stored in RAM for up to 72 hours. Restore power, and the data is automatically written to the disks.

The i8500 features dual Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, and supports online disk roaming and 32 host cluster connections per volume - the latter allowing up to 32 users to access a particular volume simultaneously.

Powering the unit is an Intel Xscale IOP processor and 1GB of DDR memory, with Thecus quoting transfer speeds of up to 150MB/s with a single port and 190MB/s with dual ports.

There's support for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems, but no word on pricing or availability yet. Want to know what else the i8500 can do? Head on over to the official product page at Thecus.com for all the details.

I wonder if the XScale is there because of the battery backup features, or if there's an x86 "Pro" version planned.Quote

150MB/s on a single port, that's clever (impossible kind of clever) given the theoretical max for 1Gb ethernet is 125MB/s and you'll never hit that due to packet overhead etc.Quote

LOL, can't believe I didn't spot that one. Maybe if you're reading and writing simultaneously and have a near zero overhead packet protocol then full duplex gigabit might do it?

...but I doubt it.Quote
