We're expecting ASUS to roll out a bevy of new computer systems to coincide with the launch of Windows 7 next week, but there's one particular nettop that stands out from the crowd - the EeeBox EB1501.

The compact system, pictured above, has the makings of a useful living room PC. Inside, it's equipped with NVIDIA's ION chipset - complete with GeForce 9400M IGP - and a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Atom N330 processor.

That's joined by 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 250GB hard drive and a slot-loading DVD writer. ASUS reckons it's the world's smallest PC to feature a slot-in optical disc drive, and at 193mm x 193mm x 39mm, it might have a point.

Elsewhere, the EeeBox EB1501 provides Gigabit Ethernet and Wireless N connectivity, HDMI out, eSATA, six USB ports, a multi-card reader and Microsoft's Windows 7 Home Premium operating system. Not bad at all, and pricing is said to start at €399.

For those wanting a closer look, German site newgadgets.de has served up the following hands-on video:

It is great that nettops are coming with optical drives, but if they wish to be the media centres that they think they are then I wish they would also include a DVB-T/Analogue tuner.

I don't think I would like the tower design next to a TV - why don't PC makers do decent HTPCs and give them a decent looking case to match?

take it off the stand and lie it flat then
I like it, although would be a little concerned if the price approached £350.
Under £300 seems about right, and if i saw it for £250 then it would be a must-buy i reckon.

That said, i'm making assumptions that it's still a cool running machine and therefore quiet… if all that dual core / ION loveliness makes it heat up then we have another kettle of fish.

Dual digital tuner is an absolute must for me, but this is the closest yet to the perfect living room HTPC
That's the problem. They can't realistically bundle a tuner, as different people have different uses. Dual analogue, dual digital, analogue/digital, satellite, etc. The only way would be to allow expansion somehow, and that would fly in the face of the form factor really… so you're stuck with USB, which is hardly ideal.
