It's been barely a month since Western Digital last extended its line of My Book external drives, but the California-based manufacturer is already prepared to roll out another upgrade.

Starting this week, the company's My Book Elite (below, left) and My Book Studio (below, right) will ship with a built-in e-label display that conveniently illustrates what's stored on the drive and the remaining capacity. Useful, say, if you're up to your arms in external storage devices and can no longer tell one from another.

The My Book Elite is NTFS formatted and features USB 2.0 connectivity. The drive is available in 640GB, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capacities, and though we're yet to see listings on Western Digital's UK site, U.S. pricing is listed at $149.99, $169.99, $199.99 and $279.99, respectively.

The My Book Studio, meanwhile, is designed for Mac users and comes formatted in the HFS Plus file system. My Book Studio features both USB 2.0 and FireWire 800 connectivity, and available capacities include a $189.99 1TB model and a $299.99 2TB model.

nice idea, but I tend to just open the drive in my computer, that tells me whats on it as well.

That works well to tell you which hard drive you're about to unplug then does it?
