MSI has today become the latest GPU manufacturer to offer a custom graphics card tweaking utility. The Taiwanese manufacturer's solution, dubbed Afterburner, has been co-developed by Rivatuner and claims to make out-the-box overclocking "an easy job".

MSI reckons Afterburner is "compatible with almost all MSI graphics cards", be it of the NVIDIA or ATI variety, and the software provides support for GPU, Shader and Memory clock adjustment, as well as support for over-voltage and fan speed control.

We've yet to give it a go, but MSI claims to have used the Afterburner utility to overclock its N275GTX Lightning GPU to 1,175MHz - a tantalising jump from the card's default frequency of 700MHz.

Afterburner's key features are listed by MSI as follows:
  • Overclocking
    • Up to 85% overclocking capability
    • Over voltage function to significantly increase overclocking potential
    • Core/Shader/Memory clock adjustment
    • Core/Shader clock Link/Unlink capability
  • Monitor
    • Clock/Voltage/Temperature/Fan Speed/Frame rate real-time monitor
    • Maximum/Minimum value for easy record of system condition
    • Real-time On-Screen-Display information in games
    • Real-time information in Windows Tray Icon
    • Detach mode for hardcore monitor style
  • Profile
    • 5 Profile to easy save/load user customised setting
    • Profile hot-key for easy and quick switch in games
    • 2D/3D automatic profile switching for difference scenario
  • Special Functions
    • Advanced fan speed control for different speed under different temperature trigger points
    • Mutil-GPU independent or synchronous control for clock/voltage/fan speed
    • Information button for graphics card driver version, BIOS version, identification, OSD status and update link
    • User Customised skin function
    • Apply overclocking setting at system startup

The software utility is available to download from MSI.com, but the chances of it working with a non-MSI card are slim to none. Can't hurt to try though, right? If you're giving it a whirl, let us know how you get on with Afterburner in the HEXUS.community forums.

This is quite a nice wee tool.
The question is, will it need an MSI bios flashed to a non-MSI card or just a plain hack to the app before it works on non-MSI cards? ;)
Seems to work just fine with my card.

Seems to work just fine with my card.

is your card MSI tho? :-P
The program is working with my Powercolor 5870. Kudos to MSI for not employing a vendor lock-in. Who knows maybe my next card will be an MSI one.
