Most users seem to have tired of computer hardware attempting to be cool by sporting a military look, but there are still a few items that make sense of their military aesthetics.

Take for example the newly-launched AMMO 2.5in external hard drive enclosure from In Win. This rugged-looking piece of kit - first seen back at last month's COMPUTEX - not only looks hard, it actually is hard, too.

It's designed to look like an ammunition cartridge, and the message from In Win is that AMMO is "prepared to protect your HD with anything you have to throw at it".

The shell, made from 0.8mm high-tensile-strength steel and measuring 85mm x 145mm x 20mm, can store a single 2.5in hard disk and is lined with vibration-absorbent padding to provide military standard MIL-STD 810F shock protection - meaning you should be able to drop it from a height of 200cm without breaking a sweat.

That funky-looking dog tag you see isn't just bundled for the sake of e-peen enhancement, either. It's actually part of AMMO's RFID security. Should you wish to unlock the enclosure, simply pass your unique dog tag across the front of the device and it'll let you in. In Win reckons it "protects your information in case it crosses enemy lines",

There's no mention of pricing yet, but the enclosure is compatible with Windows or Mac operating systems and is backed by In Win's three-year limited warranty.

So is that case 2.5“ or does it contain a 2.5” drive?

If it's the former, it probably contains a 1.8" drive, so capacity will be seriously limited.

It's looks don't float my boat at all though.

So I guess that means it holds a 2.5in drive.

*edit* dammit ninjad by format.
dont mind the looks, the dog tag thing is pathetic though

Nice theory, but obviously flawed in practice since it'd simply mean taking the dog tag too if someone wanted it.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this though, since it mentions it's military-themed.
