Hard-disk storage continues to get cheaper by the day, but we've yet to see anything as cheap as this:

It's the Hitachi DeskStar 1TB hard drive, and it's being offered at bargain-basement prices on various websites. The cheapest we've seen, though, is Ebuyer.com who is currently offering the drive for just £51.82 delivered. That's around 5p per gigabyte, for a 7,200rpm SATA drive with a 16MB cache. It just doesn't get much cheaper than that, if at all.

Ebuyer's website reckons the etailer has over 800 in stock, so this could be a good opportunity to max out your PC or NAS.

*Update* The price of the drive at Ebuyer has fluctuated throughout the week, and it is now being offered at £49.97. Lower than ever, but no longer eligible for a free delivery. To qualify for a free delivery, you need to spend over £50 and choose Ebuyer's "Super Saver" delivery option. A 99p DVD lens cleaner could be useful after all.

Explains it all :)

+1 thks

That explains quite a bit to be honest .. thks for that.

Still

Bad drive
Bad RMA
Bad lead times

=

1 x Bad company over all.

i would love to show all my email's back and forth asking were my hard drives are. I provided them even with tracking nos to prove they were sent and signatures to prove they were received yet im still having problems. The desk stat should keep its old name "death star" and the company should re name to POS .. Pile of (dont need to say the rest).Quote

Yep those Hitachi got pulled from EB site with about 600 left then couple hours later I checked was discontinued and stayed that way for some weeks.
They are back up now, but 54.99Quote

Hitachi really need to up their game if they are ever going to live down their 'Deathstar' status.
WD / Samsung / Seagate - My preference. though is noise is a factor Samsung FTW.Quote
Re: Hitachi 1TB HDD £51.82 delivered
My experience:
120GXP (120GB PATA, circa 2003) - sold after 3 yrs use, no problems
7K100 (2.5" 80GB PATA, circa 2006) - still going strong

I don't avoid any HDD brand, as long as the HD is decent I have no qualms buying it. I've also never had a HD fail on me or give me any problems...touch wood. My advice? Ensure it isn't knocked about and you cool it adequately and you'll have no problems.Quote
