Dell offers 50 per cent off XPS One 20 desktop PC

If you're looking for a good deal on an all-in-one desktop PC, you might want to take a closer look at Dell's XPS One 20.

The 20in system, pictured below, is currently being offered at half price while stocks last - a generous sale that might have something to do with the imminent introduction of the new-and-improved multi-touch Studio One 19, we reckon.

Those uninterested in touch interaction, however, can snap up one of the above systems for £549 inc. delivery - down 50 per cent from £1,099. Inside, it's armed with a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR2 memory and a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 graphics card. That's joined by a 320GB hard drive, 8x DVD burner, multi-card reader, hybrid TV tuner, Wireless N connectivity and Microsoft's Windows Vista Home Premium operating system.

Not a bad deal by any means, and 10 per cent voucher code "$46QTSRCQGRJWZ" brings the delivered price down to £496.10.

Got one for my step-dad back in January when they were doing the same 50% off deal, and I was very impressed with it. Might not be the best-specced system around for the money in terms of the CPU and RAM, but all-in-one PCs aren't going to be the focus of those who want power anyway. As an overall system though, it comes equipped with some very nice features, and the fact that it only takes a single cable (power) to get it up and running is quite baffling at first; everything else is wireless, unless you use the integrated digital TV tuner in which case it's one more cable.

It could always use more RAM and a somewhat faster CPU, but after doing a clean install it was very quick and no longer sluggish, so it's not a necessity. As an all-in-one system, it's nicely specced and it performed very nicely while I was using it.

Sorry if that post sounded sarcastic - I actually am looking to buy one of these for my mum!!!

Does anyone have any experiences with the model? Is it noisy? What's the TV tuner like?

Not noisy at all. Not as quiet as the Apple iMac, but certainly quieter than the average tower PC. Spits out a fair bit of warm air through the vents in the top, but that at least shows the cooling is doing its job in removing the heat. It's certainly not intrusive by any means.

The TV tuner seemed pretty good. I gave it a quick go through Media Centre. Takes a bit of setting up and it seems to download the TV guide from the internet rather than via the actual TV tuner, but it all worked pretty well. Was quite cool being able to resize the Media Centre window so it would sit next to a browser window or something like that. Picture quality was pretty good, and there was no glitching or anything. Decent interface too. Didn't try the media remote out but I imagine that makes things even easier.

Overall I thought it was an impressive machine, and very well specced for the money. Obviously the raw specs aren't anything special in terms of CPU, graphics and RAM, but for the average user this won't matter and it certainly makes up for it by including a lot of other nice features and extras. RAM can apparently be upgraded fairly easily too, just have to take the back cover off to get at the two DIMM slots.
