Ebuyer
You just know that a new
processor
is in the works when the price of an incumbent drops by at
least 10 per cent.
We're talking about the
AMD
Phenom II 940 Black Edition, clocked in at 3.0GHz and run off
an AM2+ form-factor.
Priced at around £240 at launch in January, quickly dropping
to £190 a few weeks later, the highest-frequency Phenom II X4
has had another snip.
Available for
£165,
including VAT and delivery from Ebuyer, the retail-boxed chip
makes a compelling case as the engine for a mid-range build. 4GB of
quality DDR2 should set you back less than £40, and a 790GX
motherboard a further £75.
AMD's a company that stresses value, and the Phenom II X4 940 BE is
certainly that. Your move, Intel.

£165.21 (£196 currently - 12:45 20/0409)
Update 12:45 - ebuyer's pricing has reverted back to pre-cut levels, at
around £195.
Scan.co.uk
has picked up on the cut that's confirmed by AMD UK marketing boss,
Andrew Buxton, to
HEXUS.channel.
Scan
link at £167.89.

My ebuyer says £196.15 inc vat, which isn't even £165 ex vat (it's £170).
OK, my ebuyer *still* says £196, but Scan now says £167. I is confuzzed...
(p.s. Scan have the 920 @ £151 - so a bit of a price drop, I think...?)Quote

AMD UK boss, Andrew Buxton, has confirmed the price cut:

What you're seeing is eBuyer's system messing around with pricing. The chip will be around £165 at pretty much every etailer in the next few days, I bet.Quote

I do hope so. Not that I can afford one, mind you, but it's nice to see that good a processor coming into the mainstream budget :) Unfortunately, it sounds like this might simply mean that 920 and 810 are simply end-of-lined, rather than leading to a full reshuffle down the line: if the X3 710 dropped to sub £90 it'd make my deliberations over my next build *much* easier ;)Quote

I've updated the article to highlight that Scan has just reduced the price of this chip to £167.89.

X4 920 is now £151, as well.Quote
Scan seem to have done a wholesale price slash on AMD processors - the Athlon 7750 BE is down to £48... go Scan :)Quote
