ASUS saw the potential in a micro-ATX-sized Intel X58 motherboard and released the ROG Rampage II GENE, complete with the majority of the feature trimmings found on full-sized models. As good as it is, the near-£200 asking price takes some shine off an otherwise decent package.

Now it's the turn of the P45 chipset to have an ROG mATX makeover. Let's trot out the MAXIMUS II GENE for your delectation:

Packing in practically every feature under the sun, the ROG-inspired P45 board will take most LGA775 CPUs in its stride. A couple of PCIe x16 slots (x8 in dual-card mode) offer CrossFireX support, and 7 SATA; 1 eSATA; 12 USB2.0; 2 FireWire 1394a; SupremeFX X-Fi audio; and 4 DIMM slots capable of running DDR2 at 1,300MHz-plus speeds make it rather special.

The inherent problem of packing so much on to a space-restricted board will be price, and we imagine no change from £150.

ASUS is a company that's large enough to have the ROG brand as a side project, but it may just be a case of over-engineering a chipset with limited potential.

Take a look at the full details here.

Nice to see Asus stepping into the mATX market with a performance motherboard for the X58 and P45 chipsets. The only other mobo manufacturer I know of who does this is DFI.
DFI board costs Ā£118… any more than that is a FAIL from me :(
Only just noticed this board, and saw Hexus had some commentary.

I'm look at the X58 version, but would also be interested (as somebody else, somewhere else, said) in seeing an AM3 version.
