Taiwan-based Transcend is one of the world's largest sellers of flash memory products, but it hasn't quite managed to establish itself as a household name here in the UK.

In 2009, however, it's hoping to change all that by launching a range of storage solutions on our shores. One that's managed to catch our attention is the 1.8in portable solid-state drive, pictured below.

The drive offers a mighty useful storage capacity of 128GB, and it's made of NAND-flash memory so you needn't worry about shock or vibration. Measuring 80mm x 50mm x 12.5mm, it's a pocket-size drive that offers a little extra versatility in the form of both USB and eSATA connectivity - the latter offering read and write speeds of 90MB/s and 50MB/s, respectively.

We don't yet know exactly when it'll arrive in UK stores, but Transcend tells us to expect a price in the region of £150 to £200.

It could be “useful”, as well as “fashionable”. You could have a “portable OS”, and connect it via eSATA/USB, if you wanted to troubleshoot a PC in a network.

(I'm sure there are other “things” that make this idea redundant, though… (Network boot?))
Thanks for the feedback. That is very useful.

“What” is “going on” with your “use” of “speech marks”?

Thanks for pointing that out. I do get a bit carried away, sometimes.
