Rugged-specialist Trimble has announced its Yuma UMPC, and it's something of a treat for outdoor users.

Yuma, pictured below, takes the familiar netbook innards and houses them in an ultra-portable shell that'll withstand "challenging work environments". In other words, it'll laugh in the face of mud, dust and extreme temperatures.

Measuring 22.9cm x 14cm x 5.1cm and weighing roughly 1.2kgs, Yuma is Trimble's first product to run a complete Microsoft Windows desktop operating system, as opposed to Windows CE or Windows Mobile.

The system features Intel's 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor and 945GSE chipset, a 32GB solid-state drive, built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, as well as two integrated cameras. Input comes courtesy of a 7in sunlight-readable touchscreen display that provides a 1,024x600 resolution.

It'll ship in April '09 - just in time to be tried-and-tested with a release candidate version of Microsoft's touch-optimised Windows 7 - but there's no mention of pricing yet.

Looks like a fun toy, especially being touchscreen. Would be interested to see what the onscreen keyboard is like!
