Final thoughts and rating

We're continually faced with the same problem when looking at cutting-edge memory, and that problem is how to balance the latest-and-greatest technology with the pragmatism of price. New, fast RAM costs significantly more than established, slower memory, and there really is no way around that.

The Corsair DOMINATOR DDR3-1,866 CL9 6GB kit is a prime example of stable, solid, fast RAM that gets the most out of Core i7 systems, but costs more than 2x a decent, same-sized pack of DDR3-1,333 memory, and Corsair manufacturers the latter, as well.

But Corsair isn't going after mass-market appeal with this kit, presently priced at £345 or so, and it's aiming at the band of enthusiasts who wish to push components to the limits and, consequently, want to remove any potential bottlenecks en-route.

Putting it practically, if you happen to be lucky enough to have, say, £3,000 to spend on a uber-powerful base unit then you'll want some tasty DDR3 RAM to power the Core i7 box. Corsair's DOMINATOR DDR3-1,866 CL9 6GB is a tasty option.

For everyone else, whose budget isn't so generous, the sheer price - and we fully understand why it must be so, down to selecting high-performing ICs and hand-testing modules - means that it's simply out of reach. We'd recommend a £145 6GB DDR3-1,333 pack in that instance.

Bottom line: quality, fast RAM whose prohibitive pricing keeps it in the realms of systems costing £1,500+ and for die-hard enthusiasts to whom every MHz counts, and that's from a brand that most people trust implicitly.

HEXUS Rating

HEXUS.net scores products out of 100%, taking into account technology, implementation, stability, performance, value, customer care and desirability. A score for an average-rated product is a meaningful ‘50%’, and not ‘90%’, which is common practice for a great many other publications.

We consider any product score above '50%' as a safe buy. The higher the score, the higher the recommendation from HEXUS to buy. Simple, straightforward buying advice.
