Catalyst 8.12, arguably the most significant revision of 2008, is now available to download at game.amd.com.

The release introduces support for ATI Stream - AMD's take on general purpose GPU acceleration - and promises to "unlock the potential of accelerated applications for millions of Radeon graphics processors worldwide".

In addition to bringing the Radeon display driver up to version 8.561, Catalyst 8.12 is accompanied by a 22mb freeware download of AMD's Avivo Video Converter. The free utility offers GPU-accelerated video transcoding, providing Radeon HD 4800-series and Radeon HD 4600-series users with a first-hand look at what the GPU has to offer to everyday computing tasks.

Aside from the added functionality, there's a healthy bump in performance across a range of titles as detailed by AMD below:

For a complete breakdown of what Catalyst 8.12 has to offer, including all the resolved issues, please refer to the official release notes at game.amd.com.

Re: News - AMD launches Catalyst 8.12, introduces ATI Stream support
Doesn't work for me in Win XP x64 - system won't boot. I have to boot into safe mode to remove it and go back to 8.11 :( :(Quote
Re: News - AMD launches Catalyst 8.12, introduces ATI Stream support
Tried to uninstall 8.11 in order to install 8.12 but the installer (installManager, both of them! both for 8.11 and 8.12) kept crashing. At the end I tried some driver removal tools and still I cannot install 8.12 due to installManager of 8.12 crashing!?!

I don't understand. The only thing I've done in between 8.11 and 8.12 is windows updates and some game installs...

Now unless I format I cannot install ATI display drivers... I had to manually install 8.12 which also means I don't have access to control center or any setting changes in windows...

How can a company like ATI not be able to produce an installation that doesn't crash?

Re: News - AMD launches Catalyst 8.12, introduces ATI Stream support
You need to do the following (I know its a pain and shouldn't be but it gets the drivers installed :P )

- Try installing and let it fail.....remember where it extracted the files to (c:\ATI\SUPPORT\<version> usually)
- Open a command prompt
- CD c:\ATI\SUPPORT\<version>\bin64
- atisetup -Install -output screen

Had to do this for the last 2 updates :(

You can do the same but with -Uninstall if you want to remove the old ones first.Quote

Anyone tried these in a media center? The last few releases have really been awful for playback of recorded TV etc.Quote
