In our recent analysis of NVIDIA's GPGPU ambitions, we concluded that its PhysX and CUDA technologies have plenty to offer. Despite the obvious performance boost available, however, we questioned the widespread use of such technologies and asked "where are the hundreds of must-have PhysX-enabled titles?"

Well, the California-based graphics giant is today taking steps to answer that very question by announcing that two of the world's biggest game studios - Electronic Arts and 2K Games - have both licensed PhysX technology as a development platform at their respective studios.

It is, of course, just a preliminary announcement, but one would assume that we're edging ever closer to realising NVIDIA's PhysX aspiration. With the likes of Electronic Arts publicly announcing their support of the technology, it shouldn't be long until we see a slew of big-name titles that showcase what NVIDIA's PhysX can do.

Tim Wilson, chief technology officer at EA’s Redwood Shores Studio, had this to say:

PhysX is a great physics solution for the most popular platforms, and we're happy to make it available for EA’s development teams worldwide. Gameplay remains our number one goal, with character, vehicle and environmental interactivity a critical part of the gameplay experience for our titles, and we look forward to partnering with NVIDIA to reach this goal.

Similarly, Jacob Hawley, technology director for 2K Games, adds:

We are very impressed with the quality of the PhysX engine and we licensed it so our studios can use this solution early in development. Developing games with an interactive story and immersive gameplay remains our number one priority, and aligning with technology leaders like NVIDIA allows our teams to concentrate on making great games.

There we have it, the numerous must-have PhysX-enabled titles could be just around the corner.

Wait…. the crappy 360 ports that lag on most systems are going to lag more???. I dont see the point in this, the gpu is the majority for limitations and they are trying to take the load from the cpu(what else does it do?) so its sitting idle.
How many of these ports have they done that play badly on the PC? I was under the impression it was just 1 or 2 sports games….

Anyway….What PhysX should bring is more realistic ballistics and deformations……and I am all for that, especially now that it can be done very cheap (and in a lot of cases, free).

About bloody time!
The sport games and some of the racing games, i wasnt being entirely serious but joking about the small amount of bad ports and with them preforming badly, heck alot of normal games dont scale that greatly on pc when they should do. TBH if it adds better effects etc then i agree its good, but they should sort it for the cpu(dunno how :P) so that the load on gpu isnt any more.

Well lets hope they make the PhysX part of the game optional. ie If you want it on it'll be on, or if you don't want it on you can turn it off but still play the game. I would like it to start being used in games though :)

Get a 2nd graphics card cheap to do the PhysX would be nice.
Wonder if 2K will be putting PhysX in Mafia II? I can see it being useful for creating a realistic sandbox world.
