The latest release of the Fedora Linux distribution, built by the Fedora Project community, is now available to download.

Version 10 arrives just over six months after Fedora 9 made its debut, and it comes with a long list of upgrades - including improved networking and the inclusion of OpenOffice 3.0.

Its major features, as listed by the Fedora Project, are as follows:

  • Wireless connection sharing enables ad hoc network sharing
  • Better setup and use of printers through improved management tools
  • Virtualization storage provisioning for local and remote connections now simplified
  • SecTool is a new security audit and intrusion detection system
  • RPM 4.6 is a major update to the powerful, flexible software management libraries
  • Glitch free audio and better performance is achieved through a rewrite of the PulseAudio sound server to use timer-based audio scheduling
  • Improved webcam support
  • Better support for infrared remote controls makes them easier to connect and work with many applications
  • The paths /usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin have been added to the PATH for normal users, to simplify command-line administration tasks
  • The online account service provides applications with credentials for online accounts listed on http://online.gnome.org or stored in GConf

Fedora 10 is available as a free download from fedoraproject.org. If you happen to be putting Fedora 10 through its paces, share your experiences in the HEXUS.community forums.

Can't really say anything about 10 but 9 was a pain on my t60p. there was no firmwares for my wireless card (ipw 3945abg) or sound (Intel hd audio) and after too many attempts to get the sudio working i gave up and installed ubuntu on it. everything worked out of the box.

Fedora has a very… purist… approach to some topics. This includes things like media support, non-free drivers, and soft-loaded firmware

However, Fedora is also the best distro to try out the latest bleeding-edge tech which eventually shuffles down to the other distros
