HP has today announced the TouchSmart tx2 - a notebook that it's claiming is the world's first to feature a multi-touch screen.

The TouchSmart tx2 takes the multi-touch technology found in HP's TouchSmart desktops, along with its custom HP MediaSmart software, and promises to deliver digital content at the touch of a finger.

The system, pictured below, features a 12.1in 1,280x800 screen that'll rotate 180° to convert the system into a multi-touch equipped tablet PC.

On the inside, it's an all-AMD affair. HP has provided a choice of AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processors ranging from 2.1GHz to 2.4GHz. Graphics, also by AMD, are provided via a 64MB Radeon HD 3200.

The system can be configured with 3GB to 8GB of DDR2 memory and up to 400GBs of storage in hard-disk drive form. There's a built-in DVD writer, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, a webcam, remote control and a six-cell Lithium Ion battery as standard.

It's available only in the U.S. as of now - with prices starting at $1,149 - and worldwide availability is expected soon.

We can expect touch-capable devices to become mainstream in the coming years, and we're looking forward to seeing what a TouchSmart notebook armed with Windows 7 can do - despite Microsoft and HP's recent falling out.

Me wants….

Any competition to this? (as saying something is a first just becaude it bundles your software isn't my opinion of the exact truth)
hmm will be wanting a new ultraportable when i part with the old tablet PC next year. Was probably going to just buy another toshiba, never liked the old HP convertables, but this could be awsome!
Sounds good.

I've liked HP notebooks for a while now. I had two in a row that were cracking machines and I've used a couple of their newer ones that I liked as well. I'm also keen on the etched designed they are putting on them now too.

My current tablet doesn't get used as a tablet too much these days, but that's mainly because it requires a stylus which can be a pain to use. Fingers would be better.

For me it was when i stopped being at uni, no lectures, much much less time spent using it as a tablet. Now its only when i'm doing some high level software design it gets used
