It has been a week of high-capacity NAS product launches from the likes of Thecus, LaCie and Netgear, but Taiwan-based Synology is today launching its DS209+, a solution that promises to bring outstanding performance on a smaller scale to entry-level businesses.

The Disk Station DS209+, pictured below, is the latest two-bay Disk Station model and comes equipped with hardware that mirrors the high-end DS508, including an 800MHz CPU and 512MB of RAM, as well as three USB ports and an eSATA port.

The device features just two 3.5in SATA II bays - allowing for a maximum storage capacity of 2TB - but promises to surpass Synology's previous two-bay offerings by improving on performance, energy saving and quietness.

The DS209+ will utilise Synology's latest Disk Station Manager 2.0 software and provide its usual array of features, including Surveillance Station, Web Station and iTunes Server. Read and write speeds in RAID 1 configuration are said to reach 42MB/sec and 36MB/sec, respectively, and power consumption tops out at 32 watts.

Edward Lin, marketing director of Synology, said:

Our DS209+ is a typical example of the ‘small but complete’ ideology. Two bay as it is physically, the DS209+ is nonetheless equipped with AJAX-based management interface, secured Internet and Intranet transmission, flexible data backup solutions, RAID 1 data protection, and designed to host up to 30 websites – thanks to the Linux Virtual Host! Meanwhile, in order to meet the requirement of massive usage, the DS209+ supports up to 256 concurrent connections and allows the creation of 2,048 different user accounts. Compiling the Windows ADS Authentication design and the Batch Users function, the DS209+ assures massive user account creation and management utmost efficiency that answers corporate needs.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed, but the DS209+ is shipping to retailers as of today.

It's now been at least a fortnight since Seagate 1.5TB HDDs have been available, giving a maximum storage space in this NAS of 3TB (before formatting!). Unless I'm missing something, and this NAS only supports up to 1TB HDDs, it's really time articles like this should take into account the increasing size of HDDs - this is the second such article misquoting the maximum HDD size.

We would not assume that the 1.5TB drives would work we can only go off a size which is verified by the manufacturer…..

I will ask Synology for you if it will work.
there's no reason why Synology's 2.6.15 Linux kernel shouldn't - unless they use a very very broken SATA controller
In that case, it is Synology's bad, not yours. Sorry!
Is this powered by 500mhz ARM or 800mhz PPC ?? Anyone know?
