If you happen to have purchased an ASUS notebook recently, you may find more than you'd hoped for on its bundled recovery disc.

Various ASUS customers have reported that they've found a selection of misplaced directories containing software cracks, serial numbers and confidential documents.

The dodgy files are known to be found on ASUS-branded Windows Vista recovery discs, and owners of the ASUS F3JC and VX2 notebooks have confirmed their existence.

The files are located in the windows/configsetroot folder, and there's a second suspicious subfolder named "cracks". Inside, users have found a cracked version of WinRAR - a popular compression package - as well as serial numbers for various other applications. Confidential documents from both Microsoft and ASUS are also said to be on the disc, and they're thought to detail major compatibility issues.

Whilst we're all checking our ASUS discs for any other goodies, the Taiwan-based manufacturer states that it's investigating the matter.

SO Asus use cracked versions of stuff…….no big deal there! Nearly every major manufacturer or software house seems to use “dodgy” stuff….you can't stop all your employees from installing stuff can you!

There is one way - kill them. Kill them all.
this kind of thing keeps happening! :D
According to an official statement from Asus (*)

Oooops!

(*) Oh alright, I made up the “official statement” bit. But I'll bet that that is a polite and heavily sanitised version of what senior management actually said.
well if microsoft can do it then they can :)
