Intel is now shipping four multi-core Xeon processors that the Santa Clara-based manufacturer claims signal "another step in Intel's march toward minimising the environmental footprint of its products."

The 45nm chips use Intel's Hafnium-based high-k metal gate formula - a material known to be more efficient than the silicon dioxide used in older chips - and Intel states that the four new Xeon parts are the first of many to be manufactured Halogen-free.

Of the four new chips, three are quad-core parts that are available now; the L5430, X5470 and X5492. The low-voltage L5430 carries a 2.66GHz clock and consumes only 50 watts of power, while the quickest of the three clocks in at 3.4GHz. The fourth chip, a dual-core X5270, will arrive later this year and uses 80 watts whilst running at 3.5GHz.

The complete lineup, including pricing in thousand-unit quantities, is as follows:

Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor L5430 2.66GHz 1333MHz 50W $562
Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor X5470 3.33GHz 1333MHz 120W $1386
Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor X5492 3.4GHz 1600MHz 150W $1493
Dual-Core Intel® Xeon® Processor X5270 3.5GHz 1333MHz 80W $1172

Intel adds that a number of system builders are supporting its new chips, and we can expect to see these eco-friendly Xeons in systems from Dell, HP, ASUS, Fujitsu, IBM and many more.

What is so bad about chips with halogons in them?
Intel - though it deals in computers then also pretty much concerned about earth's environment. and now look they have launched the eco-friendly processors.
