Every once in a while, a potentially useful gadget manages to complete pass us by - one such gadget is EVGA's UV Plus+ 16.

The small device, pictured below, offers a quick-and-easy USB solution for multiple monitors. Simply take an empty USB slot on your desktop or notebook, plug in the UV Plus+ 16 and you've got yourself another DVI output to which you can attach an additional display.

Video output can be mirrored or extended - and the UV Plus+ 16 offers a maximum resolution of 1680x1050. What's really cool, though, is the magnetic-stackable design, allowing for the user to stack a couple of UV Plus+ 16s and connect two, three or four displays.

It all sounds a bit too easy, so there has to be a catch right? Well, kind of. The small-and-tidy device features no onboard GPU and therefore relies on your system's existing processing power. EVGA recommends a minimum 1.2GHz CPU and 1GB of RAM, but we'd suggest at least a dual-core processor when displaying more demanding visuals such as Windows Vista Aero.

The UV Plus+ 16 uses a virtual driver and "high-performance DDR" that'll allow for a lossless video signal. It should be ample for your everyday desktop activities such as web browsing, but we're certain it'll struggle to cope with multi-display gaming or other visually-demanding tasks.

Looks interesting. Glad to see more of these devices come on board. With CPU's getting more and more cores things like this will be a good use for the extra cores. Shame the supported resolutions aren't too high though.Quote

Sure its a nice little gimmick, but at £64 compared to a simple VGA cable and multi monitor software. Its a bit steep.Quote

That depends on whether you have a spare vga out. Laptop users for instances may not have that luxury.Quote

I just found the EVGA UV Plus+ ( MPN: 100-U2-UV16-A1 ) a few weeks ago and wrote a review of it. I liked it a lot but found a few problems you should be aware of.
