With all the talk of low-cost netbooks from the likes of MSI, Acer and ASUS, you'd almost forget that manufacturers are still pumping out high-end gaming notebooks for those with big ruck sacks and strong backs.

Putting the spotlight back onto full-size laptops, California-based memory provider, OCZ, today announced its support for Intel's Centrino 2 (Montevina) platform with the launch of its DDR3 SODIMM modules.

OCZ states that the benefit of DDR3 now extends beyond the desktop to the laptop. The increased frequencies at lower voltages are said to bring performance and speeds to notebooks "that were previously unimaginable".

Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology Development at OCZ Technology, said:

"The Centrino 2 platform is a logical extension of Intel’s efforts spearheading DDR3 acceptance in the enthusiast segment in the desktop sector. From a technical standpoint, DDR3 memory technology is far superior to DDR2, from the higher frequency range resulting in better overall system performance to the energy savings at idle stemming from loss-less termination to the supply-voltage level and resulting in paramount energy savings in the typical notebook usage pattern."

The new modules, PC3-10666 and PC3-8500, feature latencies of 9-9-9-24 and 8-8-8-27, respectively. Both will be available in 2GiB and 4GiB dual-channel kits, but as with DDR3 for the desktop, we wouldn't expect it to be cheap. As always, they'll come with OCZ's lifetime warranty.
