A little over two weeks ago, the HEXUS question of the week asked; what will be your next graphics card?

Our HEXUS.community members were given the following 10 options to choose from:

  • GeForce GTX 280 in SLI
  • GeForce GTX 280
  • GeForce GTX 260 in SLI
  • GeForce GTX 260
  • Other NVIDIA GeForce solution
  • Radeon HD 4870 in CrossFire
  • Radeon HD 4870
  • Radeon HD 4850 in CrossFire
  • Radeon HD 4850
  • Other AMD Radeon solution

To our surprise, and no-doubt NVIDIA's too, the HEXUS.community members have shown a distinct preference for the AMD options.

As of July 3rd, 86 of our members have taken part in the ongoing poll, and no less than 74 per cent have stated that their next graphics card will be AMD-based. To help illustrate the tipping of the scales, here's a pie chart showing the percentage of users voting for each option:

The red-team (AMD), is a clear favourite following the launch of its Radeon HD 4000 series graphics cards. A staggering 47 per cent stated their next GPU would be based on AMD's top-of-the-range Radeon HD 4870, followed by 19 per cent who stated AMD's mid-range Radeon HD 4850 would be their card of choice.

On the NVIDIA front, just 8 per cent of our readers opted for the fastest single-GPU board in the world, NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 280. Followed by only 5 per cent choosing the GeForce GTX 260. Pricing, it appears, is hugely important as 13 per cent stated they'd opt instead for another NVIDIA GeForce-based solution.

Less surprising, is the fact that CrossFire and SLI options remain a niche solution for the market. Just 8 per cent of our readers showed their intent to utilise a CrossFire setup, and none have plans to run NVIDIA's GTX 200 series in SLI. Linking cards together clearly isn't as popular as both AMD and NVIDIA would have us believe.

Our statistics will no doubt be music to AMD's ears, and have been reinforced with news of further NVIDIA price cuts. Judging by our members' current opinion, the green-team may need more than just lowered prices in order to reclaim its chunk of the pie.

Is there any reason to choose Nvidia over ATI with this gen of cards??? This is the question Nvidia needs to ask its self.
The 9800GTX+ would be interesting, but it is essentially a 8800GTX+ which makes the 4850 so much more enticing. Plus CrossFire performance for 4850 seems to be really good making for an obvious future upgrade. Although the new pricing of the 9800GTX is very good, the 4850 still swings it for me: more than enough power, plenty of multimedia features, and a great price tag.
Whatever cast-off I can get from someone looking after their e-peen :p Given last gen nVidia's were top dog it'll probably end up being one of them.
Wrong section? :D
Imo the 260/280 might as well not exist at the current prices.
